TOEFL/IELTS Writing テンプレート:Independent

テンプレートの良し悪しはこちらの記事で紹介させて頂きましたが、丸暗記によるテンプレートが有効なのは10-15点程度を狙うTOEFL/IELTS初心者の方のみです（点数が取れるなら塾は存在しませんからね）。ここでは暗記型テンプレートではなく、基本となる構成方法を紹介させて頂きます。まずは27点程度までを対象者としレクチャーさせて頂きます。IELTS7.5以上/30点を狙う方 (特にSAT, ACT, GMAT受験者）はGREテンプレートも参照ください。後の記事で説明させて頂きますが、特にGMAT受験者はAWAのみならずCRに非常に関連がありますので（もちろんapplication essayにも) 特に力を入れて対策すべきです。

2 Body or 3 Body?

理由が3つの場合は3 body, 2つの場合は2 body構成になります。絶対に2 bodyを推奨します。一つ目の理由が安定性です。3 body構成の場合原則3 ideasを短時間に捻り出すことになりますが、本番思いつかなかった時点で書けなくなってしまいます。練習されている方は共感していただけると思いますが、2つの理由を思いつくことも問題によっては大変です。二つ目の理由はdevelopmentになります。段落が短い場合、説明が不十分である可能性が極めて高く、減点対象になります。目安として1 paragraph at leaset 100 wordsを書くことが求められます。3 body 構成の場合5 paragraph構成になります。しかし、一般的なTOEFL25/IELTS7程度のスコアの実力の方は300 words程度書き切る事で精一杯でしょう。developedされたbodyを3つ用意する場合最低400 words以上 (500 wordsに近いほうが好ましい）書くことが必須です。

では具体的なEssayの構成方法 (テンプレート) を紹介させて頂きます。

Question

Do you prefer to live in a big city or small town?

Topicの決め方は極めて重要です。多くの方はこのまま書き出してしまいますが、youはeveryoneを指す為、まずはcontextを絞ります (Specificity)。今回はstudentにとっては都会が良い、なぜなら便利であるかだという設定でlectureします。ここでは長くなってしまうため１reasonで進めます。

Introduction

Introductionはthesis statementを除いて点数になりません。書き出しは問題文のparaphrase, some....等何を書いても全く点数に影響しない為問題ありません。導入部は自分とは反対側の意見のsupportを導入として書くことが割と簡単でおすすめです。点数にならない為とにかく素早く終わらせることが肝要です。

このレベル帯の方は、thesis statementで自分のposition及びtwo reasonsを書けばokです。

Thesis Statement: Essayのsummary (厳密にはTopic Sentencesのsummary)をintroductionの最後の文（短いエッセイの場合原則１文）で行わなければなりません。TOEFL/IELTSはレベルが低い為あまり重要ではないですが、native level essayでは、極めて大きく点数が振られています。

解答例

Rural towns have some benefits because nature there is very beautiful (導入). However, I believe students should live in a large city because living in a large city is more convenient (Thesis). (30 words)

Body Paragraph

テンプレートの核になります。このBodyの書き方をメインで扱います。

Topic Sentence: Body Paragraphのsummaryをparagraphの最初の１文で行わなければなりません。ここでは (TOEFL 27点程度) あまり気にしなくてよいですが、Thesis同様 native level essayでは非常に重要になります。

都会が良い理由として利便性を上げます。この場合書かなければならないのは実際に便利であった体験ではなく、なぜ都会の方が利便性が高いか、です。

解答例 1

First, it is very convenient for students to live in a large town (Topic Sentence). There are a lot of people in a large town, so trains frequently reach stations. Therefore, if I miss a train in a large town, I can take another one in a minute. As a result, large cities are more convenient for students to live in. (59 words)

上記の場合なぜ都会が便利か、という説明はできていますが短いです。ここで長くする為にideaを盛り込むことは避けるべきです。本番30分でideaが複数個思いつく可能性は低いからです。ここからは書き方のtemplateを用意します。

1. 自分とは反対の立場がなぜ悪いかの説明を導入として用意する。

First strategyになります。解答例１のweak pointはどこでしょうか？Essayはreaderをconvinceする目的で書かなければいけません。解答例１の場合都会の利便性については最低限説明できていますが、ではなぜ田舎よりも便利と言えるのか？という質問に対する解答がなく、その分argumentがweakです。

解答例２

First, it is very convenient for students to live in a large town. When I went to a rural town, transportation there was very inconvenient because the population in a small town is very low. However, there are a lot of people in a large town, so trains frequently reach stations. Therefore, if I miss a train in a large town, I can take another one in a minute. As a result, large cities are more convenient for students to live in (82 words).

解答例2の場合、田舎の悪口 (何故田舎の交通の利便性は悪いのか）の説明を導入として書いています（下線部）。こうすることにより、田舎よりも都会の交通の利便性がより優れていると、主張がより強まります。1つのideaに対し、導入部をセットにして書くことができる為body developmentが容易になり、短時間で書き切ることが可能であるためTOEFL/IELTSといった時間制限のあるテストにおいては極めて強力です。このテンプレートはA or B型の問題でなくても可能で、例えばインターネットは重要かという問いに対し、(Yesの場合）ネットが無いとどのように不便かを導入部に書くことになります。この際導入部と自分の主張に一貫性を持たせてください。例えば本問いにおいては利便性について記述したい為、田舎ではお金が稼ぎにくい、という導入ではinconsistantになる為不適切です。

2. Logicを重ねる。

Second strategyになります。利便性が高いから良い、では議論が浅いです。便利であり、だからどのように良いのか？という点まで説明がされていない為不十分です。そこでbodyをさらに発展させる為にさらに踏み込んで都会はconvenientであるとどのように良いのか？というconclusionを用意します。

解答例 3

First, students in a big city can have a better grade because it is very convenient for students to live in a large town. When I went to a rural town, transportation there was very inconvenient because the population in a small town is very low. However, there are a lot of people in a large town, so trains frequently reach stations. Therefore, if I miss a train in a large town, I can take another one in a minute. Consequently, students who live in a large town can save their transportation time to their school, and they can study for a longer time than students in a small town. As a result, students who live in a large town can get a higher academic grade (126 words).

解答例3 の場合便利であるから結果として学生の成績が上がると更に議論が発展させられており結果100 wordsを越えてきています（下線部）。Writing初心者の方はとにかく自分のideaをサポートするための理由をmainに議論をしますが、その理由からどのようなことが言えるのか、というconclusionをメインにしてbody structureをすると容易に発展させられます。解答例3の場合１の約倍の文字数になり、解答例1, 2, 3の順でよりpersuasiveになっていることが理解できると思います。TOEFL 25点/Ielts 7程度を目標にする方はこの程度のことができれば十分です。

3.　理由を重ねる

Third strategyになります。これは実際の試験会場で時間に余裕ができ、かつ理由が思いついた場合に取れば良いでしょう。より強く自分の主張をsupportする為に理由をさらに追加してconclusionをサポートします。

解答例4

First, students in a big city can have a better grade because it is very convenient for students to live in a large town. When I went to a rural town, transportation there was very inconvenient because the population in a small town is very low. However, there are a lot of people in a large town, so trains frequently reach stations. Therefore, if I miss a train in a large town, I can take another one in a minute. Consequently, students who live in a large town can save their transportation time to their school, and they can study for a longer time than students in a small town. Furthermore (Moreover, In Addition), the study efficiency will also be increased because large town students will get less tired by the transportation. As a result, students who live in a large town can get a higher academic grade (145 words).

解答例4では成績が上がるというconclusionをよりサポートするために更に理由で肉付けしています (下線部)。ここまでのレベルに到達するとbodyを2つ用意するだけで約 300 words、全体で約400 words程度書くことが可能になります。ただし時間が足りない、時間無いには理由が思いつかない等の理由で（練習を積めば必ずできるようになりますが）ここまで到達できなくても問題ありません。

練習を重ねてstockを増やすことで解答例4程度は安定して書き切ることは可能になると思います。

ここまでの解答例をまとめると、1 bodyのみですが下記のようになります。

Conclusion

Conclusionも原則点数に影響を与えません。簡単にintroductionをrephraseすればokです。重要では無い為ここでは割愛させて頂きます。

Counter Argument

自分のopinionについての反論が何故間違っているか、を説明する手法をcounter argumentと言います。一部のテンプレート/塾で推奨されていますが絶対にNGです。Counter argumentは実際essayで用いられるのですが、長文の論文用であり、1000 words以下のエッセイでは使われません。Counter argumentを利用する人は上記のthree strategiesをmasterし、時間内に500 words近く書き切ることができる超上級者のみです。例えば、都会が不便という意見がどのように間違っているか、を述べたところでなぜ都会の方が田舎より良いの？という問い（自分のmain argument) のsupportにはなっていないのが理由です。したがって、counter argumentに字数を割いてしまうと本来しなければならないargumentがweakになってしまいます（減点対象になります）。Counter argumentはあくまでextra decorationである為、3 body構成のthird paragraphで利用する程度に留めておいた方が良いでしょう。ただしdeveloped bodyを2つ用意した上での話である為、繰り返しになりますが500 words程度書き切ることができる方のみ、です。

以上が厳しい時間制限がある場合の基本的なessayテンプレートになります。First and Second strategyを身につけた上で、最低限正しくgrammarを運用できればTOEFL 25/IELTS 7程度は簡単にとれてしまいます。
